Cape Town International Jazz Festival
The Cape Town International Jazz Festival is Africa’s largest jazz festival and the fourth largest in the world, being ranked right up there with Holland’s North Sea Jazz Festival and Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival. Affectionately referred to as “the Grandest Gathering in Africa”, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival has been running for 15 years and nowadays is held at the Cape Town International Convention either on the last weekend in March or the first weekend in April.
The festival attracts over 37,000 music fans from around the world and features over 40 artists comprising an equal split of top international acts, and many first rate local instrumentalists, singers and bands performing on 5 stages over the 2 show days. Past entertainers from around the world have included Brazil’s Sérgio Mendes, South African greats Hugh Masekela and Jimmy Dludlu and American jazz maestro George Benson. Everything from classic jazz and funk to spoken-word and Afropop is performed over two days to an audience as diverse as the jazz styles themselves.
March is a fabulous time of year in Cape Town weather wise and many music lovers combine a trip to the Jazz Festival with a longer stay in the area.
