Cape Winelands Tours
Whether you are a dedicated wine buff or just fancy exploring the beautiful Cape Winelands close to Cape Town, we highly recommend booking one of the excellent guided day or half day tours that we have carefully selected using specialist local wine tourism companies. The Cape Winelands experience is about much more than sampling delicious wines in beautiful surroundings. Our recommended tours also allow you to learn about the history and enjoy the incredible natural beauty of this centuries old wine region, with its historic market towns, classic Cape Dutch homesteads and picturesque mountain-side vineyards. Some introductory information about our winelands tours follows below, but for further details including pricing based on the size of your group and assistance with booking please contact our Guest Relations Manager, Chuma Gwenxa:-
Cape Winelands Tours
Scheduled Winelands Day Tour
Our scheduled full day group tour offers an excellent introduction to the Cape Winelands and the three beautiful and historic winelands towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl.
You will be collected from your villa in an air-conditioned mini-bus with up to 6 other guests around 9 am. The tour includes 3 wine tastings and the services of your informative tour guide, who takes you first to Stellenbosch, for a wine tasting, cellar tour and a walk around the beautifully preserved historic town centre.
You are then driven via the scenic Helshoogte Pass to explore the pretty small wine village of Franschhoek followed by another tasting and lunch at an award winning restaurant. After lunch you stop off at Paarl, where you enjoy another tasting before returning to Cape Town.
Gourmet Wine & Food Day Tour
Our "Gourmet Wine & Food" day tour offers a more personalised and tailor-made winelands experience that you can do privately or in your own small group, allowing you to select from a wider range of options than on our regular scheduled winelands tour.
The day’s activities can be planned out in advance with your tour guide depending for your particular wine tastes and interests, with more unusual tasting experiences available such as tutored olive oil tastings or delicious chocolate and wine pairing tastings.
Private cellar tours can also be arranged with sufficient prior notice, and in line with the “gourmet” element of this tour, lunch is taken at a top fine dining restaurant.
Bikes and Wines - Day or Half Day
These fun and innovative wine tours are targeted at young-hearted, outdoor-loving visitors who would like to experience a wine tour from a refreshingly different viewpoint - exploring beautiful vineyards in peace and quiet on a bike!
Our Cape Portfolios team had a great day out together enjoying this particular tour and it comes highly recommended by us all! You don't need to be hugely fit or a serious mountain biker as the tours mostly follow surfaced roads or good quality trails through the vines (and worse case there is no shame in pushing your bike up the few short, sharp hills!).
Your knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guide leads the group on his own bike, and he knows the estates you will visit very well, so tastings sometimes include access to the cellar or to meet the winemaker.
Tours are offered in either Stellenbosch or Franschhoek, and for a full or half day, and lunch is also arranged on the longer tours.
Bikes of all sizes are available and even a small buggy to allow younger kids to be pulled along as well, so this is a great option in the winelands for families.
Constantia Wine Tour - Day or Half Day
Constantia is the oldest wine making region in South Africa which we highly recommend visiting for its particularly beautiful and historic wine estates and internationally acclaimed restaurants just 30 minutes drive from central Cape Town.
Being this close to Cape Town and with a relatively small number of estates to choose from, it is perfectly possible to get a good feel of the Constantia wine region on a half day tour though the quality of wines and restaurants, and the beauty of the surroundings makes a full day tour the ideal choice.
The wine guides we recommend for this tour specialise in the Constantia area and offer both half and full day tours, either on a scheduled group basis or as a private tailor made tour where you pick your own itinerary.
Your choice includes a visit to the historic Groot Constantia estate, with an interesting museum where you learn how vines have been planted in the Constantia valley from as long ago as 1685. We also highly recommend the wine tastings and beautiful settings of the Klein Constantia, Buitenverwachting and Steenberg estates close by.
